GRAFFITI PIER

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Simply put, Graffiti Pier is an awe inspiring place. A historic relic of the coal industry and working waterfront of Philadelphia, the pier and its surrounding landscape has become an icon thanks to the graffiti and street art community. Our challenge was to make the area accessible and safe to the visitors that come to enjoy river access and witness the ever-changing art, while not losing what makes this place unique: the graffiti, the immense vegetation, the views, and the grit. From several rounds of engagement, it became clear that artists did not want the site to be like any other public park, but rather to be a publicly accessible site that feels found. The upland and shoreline areas buffer Graffiti Pier from future development as well as sea level rise. The shoreline is transformed from deteriorating bulkheads into tidal marsh areas with new walls for shoreline protection providing more space for art and immense ecological benefit. Graffiti Pier itself remains intact with minor repairs to the structure along with enhanced planting, new furnishings, and an access ramp and stair to reach the upper level of the historic trestle with views to the river and the Philadelphia skyline beyond.
