RAINIER COMMUNITY CENTER PLAY AREA

Seattle, Washington

In the middle of Genesee Park by Rainier Community Center sits a beloved neighborhood play space surrounded by towering sycamores, red oaks and sweetgums in need of new equipment and accessible paths. ABLE is working with Seattle Parks and Recreation to engage hundreds of local residents and organizations in the priorities for the future space: safety and comfort, imaginative and immersive play, and connection with loved ones and community.

Drawing on the site’s wetland history, themed play structures and nature play elements evoke a sandy cove nestled in a wooded shoreline–the Forest Meets the Shore.  The new play area offers a range of gathering spaces, creating opportunities for both small family gatherings and public programming led by Columbia City’s vibrant community organizations. In response to the community’s desire for imaginative and freeform play, the scheme has a range of inclusive play experiences, from traditional swings and slides to nature play along a rocky creek bed. With climate resilience in mind, the proposal includes increased shade and evergreen trees selected for their ability to withstand changing climate conditions.
